Children’s Phlebotomy

During COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the current situation with COVID-19, Starfish Outpatients in the Children’s Hospital will be unable to continue to offer a routine blood taking service for primary care patients  and the service will not be available from Monday 23rd of March 2020 until further notice.

We are sorry for the inconvenience  this may cause, however , the decision has not been taken lightly and this action has been taken in order to keep cross infection to a minimum.

If the GP feels a child does require urgent bloods there is a system in place.

(Clinic info before Pandemic):

GP Blood Service for Paediatrics

Not all phlebotomist’s are trained or experienced to take blood from Children under the age of 12 years old, so we do offer another service.

The GP blood service within the Starfish outpatient dept. at the Children’s Hospital for Wales is currently going well.

The service provides GP requested bloods for all children aged 12 and under, Monday to Friday.  They currently have 22 appointment slots a day with 2 of these being prioritised for urgent requests.

Patients are currently able to call to make an appointment between the times of 8:30-10:30 am Monday to Friday. Please telephone the switchboard on 02920 711711 and ask to speak with the Starfish Dept.

They waiting list varies given the demand and only have two allocated urgent slots a day. The GP will determine whether the bloods are urgent and will notify the department via a direct line; thus the request will be actioned accordingly by the Starfish Department.
