Book Prescription Wales
Book Prescription Wales is a scheme that aims to help people with mild to moderate emotional problems to make use of high quality self-help books that have been specially selected by psychologists and counsellors working in Wales.
This highly successful scheme involves a GP or other health professional prescribing a therapy book which is available to borrow from any branch library across Wales.
Book Prescription Wales – is the original book prescription scheme for adults with mild to moderate emotional problems. It still operates but is not being promoted heavily at the moment. We are promised that funding will be available from Welsh Government to update the list and provide prescription pads next year. Until this happens practitioners are still able to prescribe the books on the list and we are happy to issue them at libraries.
Reading Well – is a reading list for people affected by dementia.
Better with Books – is a booklist for self-help books which may be of help for children and young people with emotional issues.
Details about the scheme, the booklist and a recommendations form can be found here – Mental Health Services – Help with Books
Copies of the books for all 3 of these schemes are held at the main libraries in the Vale (Barry, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Penarth) and can sometimes be found, and can always be requested, at the community libraries in the Vale (Dinas Powys, Rhoose, St. Athan, Sully and Wenvoe).
